Managing Research Data for Vital Projects
The capacity to identify trends, and report and analyse statistics are key requirements for market surveys - whether for business or community projects. That is why the 2006 National Census of Homeless Students selected a FileMaker based system to support its research.
The Census aims to identify and provide vital statistics on the status of homeless school students across Australia. Over 2,000 State and Catholic schools assisted in the gathering of statistics. Each school was faxed a survey to complete which then needed to be registered in the Census' central system, with outstanding school surveys followed up by telephone in a Computer Assisted Telephone Interviewing (CATI) centre.
The Census researchers considered numerous specialist survey applications, but found they were too generic and did not meet the unique needs of the Census' overall objective. FileMaker developer Hi-Voltage was able to create a customised FileMaker based system in just six weeks that simplified the workflow for data collectors.
The database provided Census data collectors with a fast, reliable and easy-to-use system to manage the distribution and collection of the surveys from schools Australia wide.
The FileMaker survey solution allows the researchers to identify trends, report on statistics and generate statistical analysis reports. It also prompts data collectors to follow up schools that haven't submitted their surveys, ensuring a maximum participation rate.
"Hi-Voltage provided a cost efficient purpose-designed software built on FileMaker Pro. Other commercial survey software, while well designed for market research surveys, did not provide for the collection of both quantitative and qualitative data for counting The Homeless 2006 project. FileMaker really is the database of choice for social researchers," said David Mackenzie, an Associate Professor at the Institute for Social Research, Swinburne University of Technology. Swinburne worked on the Census in partnership with RMIT and in close cooperation with the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

FileMaker Pro 8.5 - The reviewer's verdict
Here's what some of the media around the world have been saying about the newest version of the number #1 selling easy-to-use database software - bringing the power of the Internet to your database.
"The last time I reviewed FileMaker Pro v8 I gave it an overall 9.5/10. Nobody has challenged that call to date. In fact, I don't recall ever hearing one piece of negative feedback about FileMaker since I started using it back in the days of v2. I fully recommend upgrading to this new version on the merits of the added features."
Campbell Green, New Zealand Macguide, September/October 2006
"A very exciting feature of the new version of FileMaker Pro 8.5 is the Web Viewer Control. Now FileMaker databases can incorporate information or applications via the Web on demand including realtime content that is based on information in your database."
Bill Gillespie and Rosemary McDowell, Education, August 28, 2006
"I'm no authority on database applications, but based on a couple of weeks of trying out this program, if you're thinking about investing in one, or upgrading from an earlier version of FileMaker (especially if you can make good use of the Web Viewer feature), either FileMaker Pro 8.5 or FileMaker Pro 8.5 Advanced will be well worth checking out."
Charles W. Moore, Applelink, August 25, 2006
"All of the new features added to the product's improvements make FileMaker Pro 8.5 Advanced worth considering for both upgraders and new users alike."
