Plug-In Developer FAQ

Q:s Why should I register my FileMaker Pro External Function plug-in with FileMaker, Inc.?

A: Registering your External Function plug-in ensures that it is unique and not in use by any other plug-in. It also ensures that your plug-in will be listed on the FileMaker website allowing customers to search the plug-in database for a plug-in that might suit their needs.

Q: Must a developer be a member of the FileMaker, Inc. FSA program to be eligible for this service?

A: No. All External Function plug-in developers should register their plug-in information with FileMaker, Inc. to ensure that it is unique.

Q: What if the External Function name or plug-in ID I request is already in use?

A: You will be informed during online registration if the External Function name or ID you requested is already assigned. Before filling out the form, you can use our search form to search the database to see if the External Function name or ID you are requesting has already been assigned.

Q: Are there any External Function plug-in names or IDs I can't use?

A: FileMaker, Inc. reserves all External names beginning with "Web" or "FM".

Q: May I register a group of External Function plug-in names and IDs, so I can reserve the types I want for future products?

A: Yes, but, the registration system will only hold the names and IDs for two months. After that time, the registration system automatically deletes the names and IDs unless we receive your actual External Function plug-in.

Q: How will I know my External Function plug-in names and IDs have been registered properly?

A: When you complete the electronic registration process it will conclude with confirmation of registration and will issue a unique registration code. Please take note of the registration code and use it for all future reference to your plug-in.

Q: Where can developers get more information about creating and using FileMaker Pro External Function plug-ins in their solutions?

A: The FileMaker Pro Developer Edition contains API documentation and example plug-ins with source code.
