FileMaker Server 8 has an improved database engine that will increase the performance of many basic operations using FileMaker clients in a multi-user environment. We conducted our benchmark tests prior to the launch of Server 8 and compare FileMaker Server 7v3 to FileMaker Server 8 on both Mac and Windows platforms.

How we tested

The benchmark tests used a sample database application consisting of approximately 10,000 records, 10+ files, and 50 clients all performing a series of scripted actions to simulate typical Find, Add, Delete and Edit tasks.

The results of these tests are shown below along with some details on the environment used to generate the results. These results are a rough approximation of potential performance improvements when upgrading from FileMaker Server 7 to FileMaker Server 8.

Actual performance

Your actual performance will vary since the database engine is only one of many factors that influence performance. Network bandwidth and load, computer hardware, disk drive performance, integration with other applications, and the way in which you design your database all influence your performance.

Note: This benchmark test is not a good judge of the relative speed of Mac vs Windows performance as the hardware used for each test was not equivalent.
